I guess I just like liking things

I am trying to win an award for Most Awkwardly-Titled Post, so bear with me (and vote when given a chance).

I don’t read that many comics, but I do keep up on the industry here and there, mostly via Bleeding Cool, The Gutters, and Twitter in general. I like to know what’s going on with characters I’m familiar with, and sometimes the overall story arcs are enough for me.

Two announcements this week are apparently blowing people’s minds:

  1. Thor is going to be a woman
  2. Captain America’s going to be a black guy

I don’t tend to follow people on Twitter who are the kinds of people to freak out about these things, but they are the kind of people who deal with the kind of people who freak out about these things, so I hear about it second- or third-hand. I will never cease to be amazed at what people will get up in arms about. I tend to think others are going to approach things the way I do, despite the overwhelming mountain of evidence that suggests that this rarely happens. It’s particularly egregious when the nonsense ranting comes from someone who is demographically similar to me, because I didn’t vote to be represented by that guy, you know? But now because he’s that way I figure people are probably going to think that I’m also that way… and now we’re back into the cycle of thinking “all _________s do this particular thing,” and that’s never, ever going to be productive thinking.

My initial thoughts on hearing Thor’s going to be a woman: “Huh. I wonder how they’ll work that? What’s going to happen to the current guy? Does he have to get a new name? Hey, Lara Croft wielded Thor’s hammer in Tomb Raider: Underworld, and that was pretty cool. Wasn’t Thor a horse-faced guy for a while? I’m sure this’ll be fine.”

My initial thoughts on hearing Sam Wilson is going to be Captain America: “Why would he want to give up being Falcon? Cap doesn’t fly.”

Now add Ash from The Evil Dead! And Batman!

Now add Ash from The Evil Dead! And Batman!

The other bit of comics news is crazier and more exciting than all of that: the Ninja Turtles are going to meet up with the Ghostbusters! Here’s the blurb from IDW:

Transported to a different universe by a faulty invention, the TMNT find themselves in a New York City much like their own, but with one major exception: a rampant ghost problem! If that weren’t enough, the Turtles and their reluctant new hosts, the Ghostbusters, soon find that the Turtles didn’t come alone…

Come on! That’s awesome! I will read these books, I would watch that movie, and I would definitely buy toys/figures/LEGO kits based on it.
