I guess I just like liking things

indypopcon

I am not a person for stepping outside my comfort zone. I like what I like and things I don’t know are weird and maybe terrifying to me. Once you get to know me I’ll talk your ear off, but getting me to talk to a stranger is a Herculean task (though with less slaying off things or cleaning of stables). So when I found out there was going to be a “pop culture convention” an hour away from me, I was immediately filled with two emotions:

  1. Excitement – Hey! Pop culture!  I like that!
  2. Claustrophobia (I’m calling it an emotion and you can’t stop me) – there are going to be tons of people in an enclosed area and I already feel like I can’t breathe

But I went ahead and bought a ticket anyway, because there’s enough stuff going on there that I’m excited about, so I thought I’d share a few of the things I’m looking forward to, with the added note that some of these things I was excited about I am now bummed about because they are happening on days other than Saturday, which is the day I am going.

10. My Life as a Meme (Bad Luck Brian & Mystery Meme) – The Bad Luck Brian meme isn’t one of my favorites, but I enjoy memes in general, so hearing about what it’s like to have meme-ness happen to you should be interesting. Plus, there’s a Mystery Guest, so maybe it’ll be Keyboard Cat (I know it won’t be Grumpy Cat, because she’s at a con in New York or something this weekend).

9. Nerdy improv – There’s a “nerdprov” on Friday night that I’ll miss, but there’s a Dungeons & Dragons improv on Saturday that I’m hoping to see. I love to watch improv, but it always makes me wish I was performing instead of watching.

8. Nicholas Brendon Q&A – I think it’d be fun to sit in on this and hear stories about being on Buffy, but this one’s on Friday so I won’t get to see it.

7. Drew Curtis – I’ve been getting my news from Fark for 15 years. Should be interesting to hear his insights on the biz.

6. Geek Trivia – I don’t know details and trivia like I did when I was younger, but I’m sure it’ll still be fun to see what I know compared to what other people know.

5. John DiMaggio – The voice of Bender! And a bunch of other stuff, but Bender!

4. Ron Glass Firefly Q&A – Ron Glass has always seemed like a super-nice guy, and getting the chance to hear any of the Firefly cast talk about their time on Firefly sounds like a good time to me.

3. Kevin Eastman – Co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.  If there’s one guest at the con who I’d like to meet the most, it’s this one. I’ve been a Ninja Turtles fan for almost 30 years. I haven’t the foggiest idea what I’d say to him, other than “I’ve been a Ninja Turtles fan for almost 30 years.” Honestly, I don’t have any idea what to say to any celebrity-type.

2. New Stuff – There will be a bunch of people in a bunch of booths, selling comics and who knows what else. I look forward to wandering the booths and seeing if there’s something I should be liking that I currently don’t.

1. Meeting New Friends – Though I’m missing the official Awkward Twitter Mingle on Friday, I’m looking forward to meeting in real life some new friends I’ve made via Twitter in the last year. This is the most panic-inducing part of the day for me, but at the same time I look forward to meeting these people who I’ve been having conversations with  for months.

I’m sure I’ll have a report on how it went some time next week, but if you’re going to be in the area this weekend you should check it out.
