August 29, 2014 Long Weekend
I’ve been sick this week, so please excuse the lack of article today. And with Monday being a U.S. holiday, we won’t be back until Tuesday here.
I’m guessing most of my weekend will be spent on the couch resting, but I imagine I might be able to play the last chapter of The Walking Dead Season Two.
What about you? What will you be watching or playing this long weekend?
August 28, 2014 Third Time’s The Charm?
Last week I made plans to see The Expendables III with a friend. We like to go to showings between 4-6p because they are the cheapest, but I don’t get off work until 4, so sometimes I run a bit late. As I drove to the theater I got a text from him that said, “In theater 4, saving you a seat.” Cool beans. When I got to the theater, they said, “Oh, we’ve been having some trouble with the projector, so the movie’s starting a little late.” Even cooler beans, as this means I haven’t missed anything. So I go to theater 4 and… he’s not there. “Dude,” I text. “Where are you?” Turns out, he had to gone to the other theater across town.
There wasn’t any way for me to make it over there, so I settled in to see the movie on my own. After the previews were done, the movie started — only it was Guardians of the Galaxy. See, at the theater he went to, Expendables was in theater 4, but here at the one I was at, it was in theater 3. By this time I had missed ten minutes already, so I got my money back and decided to go another day.
A different friend and I made plans to go on Sunday. We confirmed the place and time a few times, and met there. A few minutes after the previews should have started, a theater worker came in to say it would be a few minutes because they were having projector troubles. A few minutes later the manager came in to say the projector wasn’t working and the screening was cancelled.
The movie hadn’t opened so well, and I was beginning to suspect it was because no one could get in to see it!
Finally last night we were able to go see it. The projector worked, everything was on time, everything was great. Well, not everything. It turns out, the movie wasn’t very good. Nobody is more bummed about this than I am! I love the idea of The Expendables, gathering all the old action stars together into one movie and letting them blow stuff up. This one, though, spent half the movie with a group of new youngsters, which is not why I bought a ticket to an Expendables movie. It’s already hard enough to give everybody enough screen time when you’ve got a big group together, so cutting that time even more to give the new group screen time just made it worse.
Harrison Ford looked like he was enjoying himself, though, and that was good. He’s seemed a little… bored in his last couple of movies. Nice to see him having some fun.
I doubt there’ll be an Expendables 4, but I’d still see it. Get back to basics: keep the old crew, make it a bit more light-hearted, and don’t skimp on the violence. I really wanted to like this movie (I expected to!) and I was sad that I couldn’t.
August 27, 2014 Lyn Plays Amazing World
Price: Free to level 10, memberships $3.99 a month or $29.99 a year.
Client: PC
Get it from: amazingworld.com or via Steam
Yes, this is a game for small children. But my word it’s fun. And cute! Very cute. You’re a Zing, and it’s up to you to stop the evil queen someone or other and her army of Nixes from taking over Spring Bay. Can you do it? It’s all down to YOU. No pressure.
Ganz, the company behind Amazing World, is best known for the long running Webkinz game. This should comfort parents wondering if this game is properly filtered and moderated. Chat is turned off by default, and parental controls are available to decide if your child can chat or not.
Or you can be like me, a grown up type person with a fondness for rotund teddy bears. In that case you can totally pretend to be your own parent. It’s fine. No one will know.
Of course, being Ganz there’s tie in merch available. This is a given, but it also seems to help keep the subscription price down. The open worldish aspect of the game means there’s plenty to do even in the free game, but levels do stop and you lack access to various bits and pieces.
So yes, it’s a kids game and lacks any real challenge for an adult type person, but if you’re mentally 12 like myself it’s good fun and I must away and decorate my house.

August 26, 2014 Tuesday 13: Movie Soundtracks
I have been introduced to a lot of great music via movie soundtracks. Sometimes it’ll be one song that gets me to buy the whole soundtrack, but since I’m a person who will buy an album for one song (I’m always assuming there will be other songs I like on the album), that’s not a big deal to me. Sometimes that one song will lead me to buy other albums by that artist, and I’m pretty sure that’s what the artist is hoping for.
For this list I’ve left off musicals, so Little Shop of Horrors and The Muppet Movie don’t make the cut, sorry. Furthermore, I’m presenting the list in alphabetical order as opposed to ranking order. I can’t compare them well enough in my brain because some are overall pleasant, some are one-song greats, and some are great as a separate songs. I’m sure this seems like a cop-out, but I tried and tried and couldn’t manage it.
Garden State – If I had to choose a favorite overall, this would probably be the one. However, it works best as a whole album for me. I don’t generally listen to the individual songs on their own.
Highlight: “Let Go” by Frou FrouGrosse Pointe Blank – Another “whole album” one for me, though there are a couple of songs I like on their own (and one I skip every single time because “Blister in the Sun” did not need a 2000 update).
Highlights: “Let My Love Open The Door (E. Cola Mix)” by Pete Townshend; “I Can See Clearly Now” by Johnny Nash;High Fidelity – There’s two songs off this one that I absolutely love.
Highlights: “Most of the Time” by Bob Dylan; “Dry the Rain” by The Beta BandJuno – There are a few zuneworthy songs off this one, but the last 1:05 of The Velvet Underground’s “I’m Sticking with You” is one of my favorite musical minutes of all time.
Highlights: “All I Want Is You” by Barry Louis Polisar; “Sea of Love” by Cat Power; and the aforementioned minute by The Velvet UndergroundThe Last Kiss – This one wins the award for “best music for a movie I didn’t like.” It’s another Zach Braff-curated soundtrack, which makes me think I should tell you two things: 1) The Scrubs soundtrack only doesn’t show up on this list because I decided it had to be a movie list, and 2) I didn’t like the soundtrack for Wish I Was Here the way I wanted to :/
Highlight – “Paperweight” by Schuyler Fisk and Joshua RadinMusic and Lyrics – Listen, I know it’s ridiculous, but I have a soft spot in my heart for this movie, and therefore for its soundtrack. Besides, “Love Autopsy” and “Entering Bootytown” are hilarious.
Highlights: “PoP! Goes My Heart” by PoP! (Hugh Grant); “Don’t Write Me Off” by Hugh Grant; “Way back Into Love” by Hugh Grant and Haley BennettO Brother, Where Art Thou – I like to think that Mumford and Sons (and its ilk) have this movie to thank for their popularity. This one’s kind of a “whole album” for me, as it’s weird to listen to them out of context, I think.
Highlights: “I Am a Man of Constant Sorrow” by The Soggy Bottom BoysOnce – There are other good songs on this album, but “Falling Slowly” puts it on the list all on its own.
Highlight – I could copy/paste it, but I’d rather you just go read the previous line again.Pulp Fiction – Come for the “Misirlou,” stay for the “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon.”
Highlights – Add “Flowers on the Wall” by The Statler Brothers and “You Never Can Tell” by Chuck Berry to that mix, too.Rushmore – This album’s a mix of instrumental/score-type music and pre-existing songs. I don’t listen to the instrumental parts much.
Highlights – The last 2:20 of The Who’s “A Quick One While He’s Away” is my favorite part of the whole soundtrack; “Oh Yoko!” by John Lennon; “Ooh La La” by The FacesShrek/Shrek 2 – I wasn’t expecting there to be so many great songs in a movie about an ogre.
Highlights (Shrek) – “My Beloved Monster” by The Eels; “Hallelujah” by Rufus Wainwright; “I’m on My Way” by The Proclaimers
Highlight (Shrek 2) – “People Ain’t No Good” by Nick CaveThat Thing You Do – This soundtrack does such a great job of capturing the feel of the era without using any actual songs from the era, and there are several good songs on it, not just the title track.
Highlights – But, yeah, the title track is great. The Wedding Singer (2 Volumes) – Throw a bunch of 80s music on a CD and you’re bound to have some fun stuff, right?
Highlights – “Hold Me Now” by The Thompson Twins; “Somebody Kill Me” by Adam Sandler; “Rappers Delight” by Sugarhill Gang with Ellen Dow; “Just Can’t Get Enough” by Depeche Mode; “Grow Old With You” by Adam Sandler;

August 22, 2014 Temple Run 2 Rings
UPDATE 12/2/14: I finally got this achievement, but it was stupid how I had to do it. I reinstalled the game and ran through from the ground up again. I got a challenge to collect 20 items and after beating that challenge, the achievement popped.
I have been playing Temple Run 2 on my Windows Phone for about nine months. I got my first achievement for it on December 21, 2013, and figured I’d have all of them by now. I”m still missing one, the elusive “Bonus Items (Collected 20 bonus items).” Now, I have collected way more than 20 bonus items, which are things like gems, treasure chests, and whatnot. However, it seems you have to collect them after being given the task to collect them, and that hasn’t been delegated to me yet.
Take a look at my current stats for the game:
First off, the idea that I’ve played 1,169 games of Temple Run 2 is mind-boggling. However, this is my go-to game while waiting in line, waiting for computers to reboot, waiting for updates to install, that kind of thing. And a game of 100 meters takes significantly less time than one of 35,000.
That’s not the stat the bugs me, though. It’s that total distance one: 4.2 million. It seems like a lot, but that’s not the point. The point is that in all that time, I still haven’t collected the last ring. See, in Temple Run 2, you can collect gems and coins and “artifacts.” The artifacts show up as treasure boxes in the game, which you have to jump to collect while you’re running. You miss the jump, you don’t get the artifact. If you get the artifact, you don’t know what you’ve gotten until the end of the race – the treasure box opens and your prize is revealed.
Take a look at this:
This is a combination of three screens. On the left are my current objectives, one of which is to collect all ten rings. On the right two screens, you’ll see how many times I’ve collected each ring. So far I have collected 39+ rings (the one got cut off in my screencap), but I still haven’t collected all ten rings.
They’ve added a couple of special event collections, like 4th of July and Christmas, both with five things to collect. I finished both collections fairly quickly and earned a hat I could wear (a Santa one and an Uncle Sam one). There must have been some adjustable setting they can manipulate so people can collect those all around the appropriate time of year.
But, see, that settings manipulation is what frustrates me. I’ve collected 39+ rings and run more than 4.2 million meters, but I still don’t have the last ring. And there’s nothing I can do about it! Most games will set you up for eventual success, often as a result of either hard work or time spent. This one, it seems, doesn’t give two hoots about how you do or how long you’ve been doing it. It’s frustrating, to say the least.
The thing is, I’m not even sure the rings play into the achievement I’m after. There’s some debate that the achievement I need is glitched and I’ll need to uninstall the game (and my progress in it), reinstall, and try again. I’m not sure I’m ready for that.
What I really need is for there to be a Sonic the Hedgehog character I can purchase. I’ve already gotten the Usain Bolt character, but we all know that Sonic’s the best at collecting rings. He’d get it done.
