July 30, 2013 Tuesday 10: Actors Born in 1972
Last week’s post was on one of my favorite movie years and it prompted this entry. 1972 was the year I was born, so I’m roughly the same age as these people.
Rather than put them in “favorite order,” I’m going to leave them in birth order, because I don’t want Mr. Johnson to feel the pressure of always being on the top of my lists. I will instead list my favorite thing that each person has done.
January 11: Amanda Peet – While I did like her character on the few episodes of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip that I saw, my favorite thing she’s done was her guest starring bit on Seinfeld. But that hardly counts because it was one episode and it’s only my favorite because it’s Seinfeld, so I’ll go ahead and pick The Whole 9 Yards, which I mostly liked because Bruce Willis and Matthew Perry were so much fun in it. I haven’t yet seen The Way Way Back, but I’m expecting to like that one, so this might change.
April 17: Jennifer Garner – This will give you some idea on how out of the loop I am: I’ve never seen Alias, the thing she is most famous for. I liked 13 Going on 30, but really only because of the Thriller dance sequence. My two favorites of hers are Juno and Daredevil, and I’m going to go with Daredevil even though I’m supposed to hate that movie. I didn’t! And I really liked her in it — which is why the follow-up Elektra was such a disappointment to me. I had very high hopes for it, but, man, it was very very not good.
May 2: Dwayne Johnson – We’ve already covered this! I’m still sticking with The Other Guys, but, really, I could just say “all of them” here and we’d have an understanding. He is only four days older than me. This is all kinds of crazy to me.
July 29: Wil Wheaton – Star Trek: The Next Generation, and I’m not even kidding. Listen, when the show was on originally, I believed the hype and followed the crowd and booed Wesley like everyone else. When I went back and watched the series last year, though, I not only didn’t hate Wesley, I kind of liked him. I’m sure some of that is because Wil has become a geek icon of sorts and I’m projecting that backwards, but Alexander (Worf’s son) was a way more irritating child on that series.
August 12: Rebecca Gayheart – Right now you’re saying, “Who?” (unless you were a big 90210 fan, apparently) I’m including her for one reason: Dead Like Me. I was surprised to be reminded that she was only on the show for five episodes, because it seems her part was much bigger. Ah, well. I love that show so she gets a nod here.
August 15: Ben Affleck – Okay, now don’t hate me, but I’m tempted to go with Daredevil here again! Sure, I’m supposed to pick Good Will Hunting, and it was fine, but I like some of his other stuff so much more. His part of the movie Hollywoodland was fantastic (even though the non-Affleck parts bored me almost to tears), and the fellow has turned out to be a good director. i’ll give the nod here to The Town, even though I really want to say Daredevil, just so you’ll have a little amount of respect left for me.
August 30: Cameron Diaz – The Mask, and I don’t even have to think about it. Her first movie was her best movie for me, even though she’s done a lot of other really good things (Shrek and Being John Malkovich, for instance).
September 28: Gwyneth Paltrow – Early contenders are the Iron Man series and Se7en, but I have to go with The Royal Tenenbaums here. That isn’t just my favorite movie of hers, it’s probably a Top 20 All-Time for me.
November 6: Rebecca Romijn – She’s great as Mystique in the X-men movies, but I’d feel weird giving the award to a naked blue woman. I’m going to go with The Punisher, because even though that movie had some severe problems (Miami? Really?), there were many good things about it. Tom Jane and Ms. Romjin were two of those good things.
December 29: Jude Law – Jude is a hard guy to pin down. For lists like these, when I think of an actor I’ll usually get an immediate film or role in my head and then I’ll go look at their history to see if there’s anything I’m forgetting. The only two things that sprang to mind for me here are A.I. and the Sherlock Holmes movies, and I don’t want to let either of those be it, so I looked it up. And see, I had completely forgotten he was in Gattaca. Great movie, so it gets the mention here.
Thank you, fellow 1972ers. Nice work all around.

July 27, 2013 Ranking Bad Hair Day
This is the ninth in a series of transplanted articles from my other blog. The transplants will run on Saturdays until they’re all over here. They are copied and pasted, but might get slight edits here and there.
This album was released on March 12, 1996. If I’m remembering correctly, this was the year I was working full-time at Walmart, in the electronics department. If so, this would be the first Weird Al album I bought on the day of its release. I don’t think I’ve missed a day of release since.
Normally I’d put this next to the song it’s about, but this is kind of a big deal and I want to highlight it. The song “Amish Paradise” on this album is a spoof of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise,” a song featured on the soundtrack of Dangerous Minds. Al, as is his wont, sought permission from the artist before doing it, and was told by his record label that permission had been granted – Al even spoofed Coolio’s hair on the cover of this album. At the Grammys, Coolio said he had never given permission and was mad that Al had used his song. Al wrote a letter of apology to Coolio but never heard back from him. It was a bigger flap than it sounds like here, but it ends up okay. At the 2006 Consumer Electronics Show, Coolio came over to Al and they made up. The funniest part to me is… when’s the last time you thought or heard about Coolio? I wonder just how many acts Al has parodied that he has outlasted, career-wise. I’m guessing a lot.
12. Cavity Search – A song about dentists, parodying a U2 song. This song has two strikes against it for me: I’m not a huge fan of dentists and I’m not a huge fan of the original song.
11. I’m So Sick of You – Another relationship song, but this one seems more mean-spirited than usual.
10. I Remember Larry – He reminisces about an old friend that used to play practical jokes on everyone all the time. Like, all the time. Enough so that in the end he and his friends take Larry out to the woods and leave him in a shallow grave. This song would fit in the “dark humor” category, by the way. And while I certainly don’t condone kidnapping and murder, I also think that people who play practical jokes deserve some sort of special punishment, so… yeah.
9. Everything You Know Is Wrong – This song is a puzzle. On the one hand, it’s sort of a typical “nonsense” song, stringing together Golden Grahams, wolverines, Jamie Farr, aliens, and papercuts. On the other hand, the chorus has a philosophy to it that’s easy to miss in the ridiculousness of the verses:
And everything you thought was just so
Important doesn’t matter
Everything you know is wrong
Just forget the words and sing alongThere are two things there – the idea that the stuff we think is important isn’t, and the follow-up that we should take things as they come (“forget the words and sing along”). Maybe I’m reading into it too much, but that’s a little deeper than I’m expecting out of a Weird Al song.
8. Phony Calls – A song about prank phone calls, with a special guest appearances by one of Bart Simpson’s many prank calls to Moe. The song is a parody of TLC’s “Waterfalls.”
7. Syndicated Inc. – A spoof of “Misery” by Soul Asylum, one of many songs I’ve come to enjoy after hearing Al’s version first. This is another TV song.
6. The Alternative Polka – Songs by Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, The Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters, Green Day, and a few others.
5. Callin’ in Sick – I haven’t been tallying them, but Weird Al has many songs that have the number 27 in them. In this song about calling in sick to work in order to have a day off, Al says he “hits the snooze alarm for the 27th time.” I’ll let you figure out why I like this song.
4. The Night Santa Went Crazy- Another dark Christmas song. Santa snaps and goes on a killing spree at the North Pole. My favorite line is probably “He took a flamethrower and barbecued Vixen / And took a big bite and said, ‘It tastes just like chicken’.”
3. Gump – Movie in song form! Love these. This one takes “Lump” by The Presidents of the United States of America and turns it into a much better song, telling the story of “Forrest Gump.”
2. Amish Paradise – I love this song, one of Al’s most famous ones, except for one line. You’ll probably roll your eyes at me, but if you know me, I also think you’ll understand. The song is about Amish life (“raise a barn on Monday, soon I’ll raise [another]”), and at one point, the main character goes into town and a local boy kicks him in the butt. The main character says “I just smiled at him and I turned the other cheek” (ha ha) “I really don’t mind, in fact, I wish him well / I’ll be laughing my head off when he’s burning in hell.” Here’s my problem: no one who truly believes in a literal hell would ever laugh at the idea of someone having to spend eternity there. If you find a Christian/Amish/Whatever that would laugh at that, you’ve met a Christian/Amish/Whatever that has a completely wrong outlook on a lot of things.
Sorry. A little more serious than this write-ups tend to be, but that’s always bugged me about that song, enough that I don’t sing that line when I sing along to the song.
1. Since You’ve Been Gone – Another relationship song in a doo-wop style that is just fantastic. He talks about just how awful he’s feeling since his girl left him – horrible, horrible stuff. And at the end, he says he feels “almost as bad as I did when you were still here.” Ya burnt!
Only four albums left!

July 26, 2013 Good Things in Bad Stuff Liveblog: X-Men Origins: Wolverine
That title has a lot of colons in it.
This movie has taken a lot of flack for being terrible, and I haven’t watched it in a while. In case you’ve forgotten, our semi-regular “Good Things in Bad Stuff” feature tries to find exactly that. I’ll do my best not to complain about the film and instead talk about the stuff in that is good, fun, and cool.
Here we go!

July 26, 2013 Good, Bad, I’m the Guy with the Posts
The bad news: There’s no post this afternoon
The good (depending on your POV) news: It’s because I’m going to do a liveblog tonight!
This week I’ve been watching the X-Men movies to get prepared for The Wolverine this weekend. I’ve gotten through the first three, so the next one up is X-Men Origins: Wolverine, a movie that has received a large number of complaints. Coincidentally, it’s been a while since my last Good Things In Bad Stuff feature, so you see where I’m going with this.
My plan is to start the liveblog at 6:30 ET tonight, so those of you on the West Coast can finish out your “work” day by following along.
See you back here in a few hours!
