October 28, 2014 Tuesday 5: Movies of 1975
The thing I’m noticing about these ever-diminishing lists is that while I recognize some of the movies I haven’t seen from the list, I have no desire to go back and catch up on most of them. Most of the “classics” are things I have seen (but, of course, not everything I’ve seen is a classic). It’s a weird kind of fun to read through the lists and whittle it down, and I encourage you to try it some time.
Here are all the movies I’ve seen from 1975, in reverse order of enjoyment:
5. The Apple Dumpling Gang – I vaguely remember seeing this one when I was a kid, and I sorta kinda recall enjoying it. Let’s face it: Tim Conway and Don Knotts in a movie are going to be at least a little bit of fun. I don’t remember anything about it, though.
4. Death Race 2000 – One of Sylvester Stallone’s first movies, which is the only reason I watched it. I’m not surprised they did a remake (which I haven’t seen) as it’s the sort of concept that could do with all the new technology available for filming car races.
3. Jaws – This is one of those classics everyone’s always talking about. It’s okay, I guess, but if I never saw it again it wouldn’t be that big a deal to me. I do like that Spielberg nicknamed the mechanical shark “Bruce,” though. I don’t know why.
2. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest – I watched this right around the time a friend of mine was performing in a stage version of it. Jack Nicholson, man.
1. Monty Python and the Holy Grail – I don’t quote it all the time like I used to, and I think that helps me continue to enjoy it any time I see it. It’s hard to pick a favorite scene, but right up there for me has to be the king stopping his son from singing and trying to explain to the guards that they need to stay and guard him. “Some day, lad, allllllllllllll this will be yours.” “What, the curtains?” “No, not the curtains.” BEST.

October 27, 2014 Rating Movies
I paid $9.25 to see John Wick. I liked it about $7.75 worth.
That’s what I said on Twitter on Friday. A couple of friends commented on how they liked that way of rating movies, so I thought I’d talk about it a little today.
First of all, as I’m sure I’ve mentioned before, I generally like to go see movies at the theater between 4p and 6p. Our local theaters charge a reduced rate during those hours, so it only costs $6.25 to go see a movie. The downside is that very few of my friends are available to go see movies at that time, so it’s usually just me and one other guy. This really isn’t a huge downside, as the $3 savings per movie works out to half of another movie. I’m working with a limited budget for going to movies, so that helps a lot.
As you might imagine, when I’ve promised to go see a movie with a friend but they can’t go until after 6, that pricetag stings a little. I had promised a few months ago I’d go see The Equalizer with a friend, and when it came out he couldn’t go until an after-6 showing. I ended up liking it, but I would’ve enjoyed it a lot more for $3 less. In that instance I had to take into account the time spent with friends, which I’m told is “priceless.”
The cheaper price makes me more willing to take a chance on a movie, too. I generally don’t go into a movie without knowing at least something about it. Usually I know quite a bit about it, and normally I even have a pretty good idea of how much I’ll like it. I’m rarely surprised by movies, and I don’t mind that. I realize that’s not the norm for most folks, but it’s how I like it, so I don’t worry about it too much.
So here’s where this line of thinking got me in regards to John Wick: if I enjoyed it $7.75 worth out of the $9.25 I paid to see it, how does that translate to my normal cost of $6.25? I definitely would have felt it was worth the full $6.25, but would I have felt it was worth paying more? Is my $7.75/$9.25 rating equal to a rating of 84% on a traditional 100-point scale? If so, would that make a baseline of $6.25 turn my rating into a 124% rating? That makes no sense, so, no, I don’t think so. I think the baseline changes the rating, and even though $6.25 and $9.25 are both dollar-based, it’s still as different as using thumbs and stars.
Now, with all that said, dollar-based ratings aren’t even the system I tend to use in my head. I’ve been wanting to do a video to explain my method at some point, but I need a second person’s help and haven’t pursued that much yet. Suffice to say it will come eventually. I’m not going to swear it’ll blow your mind, but it just might. In any case, it’ll definitely be worth the amount of money you paid to get it.

October 24, 2014 tGIF: Torn Apart Edition
Last night a traumatic, terrible thing happened: my Minecraft world got deleted by accident. I have no one to blame but myself, but I sat there shocked for longer than I’d care to admit. I still can’t believe it happened and I can’t process it. This first GIF sums up how I’m feeling:
Nothing to do now but move on, I guess. I started a new world, but it doesn’t feel the same. We’ll see how it goes.
Here are some other GIFs to help ease the pain I know you’re feeling for me.
Have a great weekend, zwolanerds!

October 23, 2014 Avengers: Age of Ultron
After someone leaked a bootleg copy (which got hilariously blamed on Hydra), Marvel went ahead and released the trailer for the next Avengers movie yesterday. I’m sure you’ve already seen it, but just in case you haven’t, here it is:
- James Spader’s voice is chilling
- What’s going on with the Hulk? Several shots of Banner not looking so good, and then Hulk’s fighting with Iron Man. Speaking of…
- HULKBUSTER IRON MAN!
- Ultron is the creepiest looking robot in a long time
- Lots of shots of the Avengers by themselves. Hmm.
- I don’t know enough about Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch to know what their deals are (other than that House of M stuff Scarlet Witch does, but there’s no X-Men in the MCU, so I dunno)
- Black Widow launches a motorcycle out of a plane! Explain to me why she doesn’t have her own movie yet? I think she and May from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. should just go around kicking everyone’s butts.
- I don’t envy the MCU having to handle Quicksilver after this summer’s X:Men: Days of Future Past did such an amazing job with him
- Shirtless Thor and some ballerinas: two completely different types of fan service in action!
- I don’t even know what can break Cap’s shield, but I don’t like it one bit, no, sir.
The overall tone seems darker and more serious, and that worries me a bit, but I trust the team. Joss Whedon’s pretty good at weaving humor in with the dark.
Are you excited??

October 22, 2014 Lyn Plays Marvel Super Hero Squad
Price: Free to play, paid membership available
Client: Unity Web Player
Play it at : heroup.com
This is a game I’ve tried to play for you for a while, but it’s an absolute jerk to record. This video, you will notice, has no game sound. Which is a shame as I refer to the music a couple of times. Playing it full screen renders it un-capturable (that’s a word), so I did my very super best and you can thank me in the comments.
As for the game itself, it’s pretty much adorable. Which might not be what you, personally, are looking for in a Marvel themed game but come on now. You collect tacos! You throw mini flying saucers off buildings! You have chubby wubby widdle cheeks yes you do. You start with a stable of four heros – Iron Man, Black Widow, The Hulk and Spiderman. Others are unlockable over time, or via paid membership and they level independently. Did that make sense? I meant getting your Iron Man to level 2 doesn’t make your other heros hit 2, they need to be used to get the levels.
The graphics are lovely actually, they look amazing with depth of field on and other tweaks, none of which would record. There is a substantial download before you can play, but I suspect it might be worth it. I actually dabbled with this back in July when I first completely failed to record it, and spent a few hours in there just popping about, collecting stuff and zooming around on my spiderweb. Nifty.
