I guess I just like liking things

I am trying to win an award for Most Awkwardly-Titled Post, so bear with me (and vote when given a chance).

I don’t read that many comics, but I do keep up on the industry here and there, mostly via Bleeding Cool, The Gutters, and Twitter in general. I like to know what’s going on with characters I’m familiar with, and sometimes the overall story arcs are enough for me.

Two announcements this week are apparently blowing people’s minds:

  1. Thor is going to be a woman
  2. Captain America’s going to be a black guy

I don’t tend to follow people on Twitter who are the kinds of people to freak out about these things, but they are the kind of people who deal with the kind of people who freak out about these things, so I hear about it second- or third-hand. I will never cease to be amazed at what people will get up in arms about. I tend to think others are going to approach things the way I do, despite the overwhelming mountain of evidence that suggests that this rarely happens. It’s particularly egregious when the nonsense ranting comes from someone who is demographically similar to me, because I didn’t vote to be represented by that guy, you know? But now because he’s that way I figure people are probably going to think that I’m also that way… and now we’re back into the cycle of thinking “all _________s do this particular thing,” and that’s never, ever going to be productive thinking.

My initial thoughts on hearing Thor’s going to be a woman: “Huh. I wonder how they’ll work that? What’s going to happen to the current guy? Does he have to get a new name? Hey, Lara Croft wielded Thor’s hammer in Tomb Raider: Underworld, and that was pretty cool. Wasn’t Thor a horse-faced guy for a while? I’m sure this’ll be fine.”

My initial thoughts on hearing Sam Wilson is going to be Captain America: “Why would he want to give up being Falcon? Cap doesn’t fly.”

Now add Ash from The Evil Dead! And Batman!

Now add Ash from The Evil Dead! And Batman!

The other bit of comics news is crazier and more exciting than all of that: the Ninja Turtles are going to meet up with the Ghostbusters! Here’s the blurb from IDW:

Transported to a different universe by a faulty invention, the TMNT find themselves in a New York City much like their own, but with one major exception: a rampant ghost problem! If that weren’t enough, the Turtles and their reluctant new hosts, the Ghostbusters, soon find that the Turtles didn’t come alone…

Come on! That’s awesome! I will read these books, I would watch that movie, and I would definitely buy toys/figures/LEGO kits based on it.

Back in February I picked up the game Asura’s Wrath during a sale week on Xbox Live. Here’s what I had to say about it back then, after playing for a half hour or so:

I… don’t know what this is. I’m a sucker for third person action-adventure games, but I don’t know what’s going on here. One description I read of this game (after buying it) said it was very much like anime in game form. I don’t read anime, and I’m thinking that might be fundamental to understanding what’s going on here. I’m 15 minutes into it and there’s guys without spacesuits standing on the outsides of space ships and hitting other giant space things with their fists and making them explode. I’m a little out of my element here.

I have now finished the game and would like to reiterate: I am a little out of my element here. Lets take a look at Asura, shall we?

Yes, he has six arms in this shot.

Yes, he has six arms in this shot.

See, in that screenshot Asura is very angry. When he gets very angry, he pops out four more arms. I think this is why he doesn’t wear shirts. He’s angry a lot, so he’d be going through shirts at a rapid clip.

In his defense, Asura has a lot to be angry about. He was part of a group called “The Eight Guardian Generals,” who went on to betray him and enslave his daughter for 12,000 years. Yes, 12,000. Actually, by the end of it, it’s more like 12,500, which is even worse. Asura comes back from the afterlife a few times and pursues and fights the Generals (who are demigods now – 12,000 years is a long time to level up). They swear they’re doing good things, protecting the planet Gaea and all, and they need his daughter because she can channel the power they need. Asura has two problems with this:

  1. They’ve enslaved his daughter Mithra to do this.
  2. They’re harvesting people’s souls to turn into the power they need.  It’s… a little strange.

Asura’s method of dealing with things is to punch them, and the player’s main goal in each stage is to punch enough things to make the burst gauge fill up. Once the burst gauge is activated, a quick time event (QTE) activates, and successfully managing that causes Asura to punch things in an even more devastating manor. QTEs also show up during cutscenes and affect your rating for each episode, so don’t try to skate through with passive watching.

Here are a few of the crazier things that happened during the game (spoiler alert, I guess?):

  • As I already mentioned, the game starts with Asura and the other Generals standing on the outside of spaceships in space while fighting.
  • Asura climbs up out of Naraka (the afterlife-ish area) via columns there
  • Again: when Asura gets really mad, he pops out four more arms.
  • But then Asura gets even angrier, he turns into an all-black version of himself that is even crazier, but this only happens once.
  • The Gohma (the creatures the Generals are ostensibly protecting Gaea from) are red-and-black bigger versions of things like apes, turtles, stingrays, elephants, and those lantern fish found at the bottom of the deepest parts of the ocean.
  • More than once Asura punches the ground hard enough to launch himself into space.
  • At one point, Asura (and a partner who joins him near the end) is basically fighting the planet itself.

I played through the game mostly with a furrowed brow and a headshake – “What is going on?” was my most-asked question. I sorta figured most of it out, but was often frustrated by some boss fight or another that included unblockable or undodgeable attacks. But I finally got through it!

…sort of.

In reading up on the game some more, it turns out there’s a secret episode that only unlocks when you get an S rating on all 18 episodes. The secret episode is the actual ending. And then there’s DLC which some report is the real actual ending. I’m invested enough in this crazy game at this point that I’m considering playing through again on Easy to try for the S ratings so I can see this last episode. If I do, it’s almost a sure bet I’ll have to get the DLC, too.

I’m glad I didn’t pay a lot for the game, and I didn’t hate all of it, I just didn’t understand what was happening at some parts. I will say that it hasn’t convinced me to start reading or watching any more anime than I already was (none).

Price: Free to play, Microtransactions (I think)
Client: Browser
Play it at: dinostorm.com

I don’t know what kind of fever dream came up with this concept. It’s a Wild West MMO, but instead of horses you ride dinosaurs and instead of a six shooter you have a laser cannon. Somehow, it works. I know, it sounds ridiculous. It sort of is ridiculous, and maybe that’s why it works.

The player base seems to be active, there were plenty of people around as I noobed my dino around town. It’s graphically great, the map seems quite large and I had no lag apart from some stuck movement keys, but that might well have been my keyboard. Who knows? Not me. I’m not here to know stuff, I’m here to shoot stuff while riding a dinosaur.

As a casual MMO, I’d say this would be a fun bet. It’s a tiny bit facebooky in places, and very clicky, but sometimes we just need to roll on into town, to hit the saloon, water our dinosaurs, and polish our laser canons.

milootisThe farther back I go, the fewer movies I’ve seen. I anticipate a point where I won’t have seen enough movies from a particular year to be able to make a list, and I’m kind of curious what year will be the first in which that happens.

It turns out that my list (again) majors in comedy and sci-fi with a minor in action. This shouldn’t surprise any of us by this point.

10. Stand by Me – Honestly, I’m so put off by the vomiting scene in this movie that I barely remember any of the rest of it.

9. The Karate Kid, Part II – I remember three things from this movie: Mr. Miyagi’s “Don’t know, never been attacked by tree” line; the goofy drum rattles that inspire the winning move; and the ubiquitous Peter Cetera song.

8. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off – I think I’ve come to the place in my life where the idea and memories of this movie are better than the actual movie is to me. I was talking to Lyn about it, and we came to the conclusion that when you’re young, Ferris is a hero, but when you’re older, you realize what a jerk he is to everyone else.

7. Platoon – I dated a girl in high school whose dad was a Vietnam vet. He sad this movie and Full Metal Jacket were the closest to portraying the actual experience. Me, I have memories of playing a Platoon game on the Commodore 64 where you had to frag your commanding officer.

6. Aliens – This and its predecessor are, to this day, two of the scariest movies I’ve ever seen. I know this one trades the moody feel of the first for all-out action, but it still spooks me.

5. Big Trouble in Little China – This is the movie on this list I have rewatched most recently. It is a ridiculous hoot.

4. Short Circuit – I kind of feel like I missed an opportunity to put this one at Number Five.

3. ¡Three Amigos! – About seven years ago, I chose this for a movie night with a bunch of friends who were in general 7-10 years younger than me. They did not enjoy the film. I don’t hang out with most of them any more.

2. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home – It’s the silliest of the films, but “the one with the whales” is probably the Star Trek film that the most non-Trek fans have seen.

1. Little Shop of Horrors – I wonder how many of my lists this movie can top?

The Adventures of Milo & Otis barely missed the cut. Like, it was down to it or Stand By Me. In the end, I was reminded of all of the animal endangerment on the set and I guess The Body in Stand By Me wasn’t real, so it wins this round.

There are two albums being released tomorrow that I plan on getting, one because I have to (it’s right in the name!) but both because I know I’ll like them.

You literally have to buy this album

You literally have to buy this album

First up is Weird Al’s new album, “Mandatory Fun.” I have purposefully been avoiding any information on this one other than official releases from Al himself. I’m aware that the album has been online for a bit already, and one of my friends who downloaded it mentioned there’s an Imagine Dragons parody and another friend talked about there being a “Blurred Lines” parody called “Word Crimes.” These are literally the only two specific things I know about the album other than the names of the tracks.  I’m looking forward to listening to it on repeat for the next week so I can do an album ranking for it next Monday.

Here’s the tracklist for the album. Make of it what you will:

1. Handy
2. Lame Claim to Fame
3. Foil
4. Sports Song
5. Word Crimes
6. My Own Eyes
7. NOW That’s What I Call Polka!
8. Mission Statement
9. Inactive
10. First World Problems
11. Tacky

The other album hitting tomorrow is the soundtrack for Wish I Was Here. I really liked the song selections during the movie, so I knew I’d be buying the album. Zach Braff tends to pick songs for soundtracks that I didn’t know I would like, and Garden State soundtrack is maybe my favorite soundtrack of all time. Even the soundtrack for The Last Kiss, a movie I didn’t really like all that much, had a soundtrack I loved. Your mileage will vary, I’m sure, but I’m betting I like this one, too, even if I won’t actually listen to it for at least a week.

Here’s the track listing for it:

1. So Now What (The Shins)
2. Broke Window (Gary Jules)
3. The Mute (Radical Face)
4. Cherry Wine (Live) (Hozier)
5. Holocene (Bon Iver)
6. The Shining (Badly Drawn Boy)
7. Mexico (Jump Little Children)
8. Wish I Was Here (Cat Power + Coldplay)
9. Wait It Out (Allie Moss)
10. The Obvious Child (Paul Simon)
11. Breathe In (feat. Wafia) (Japanese Wallpaper)
12. Heavenly Father (Bon Iver)
13. Raven’s Song (Aaron Embry)
14. Mend (The Weepies)
15. No One To Let You Down (The Head and the Heart)
